GreenQUEST brings together research, demonstration and assessment activities to explore the production and use of green liquefied fuel gas in Southern Africa. This section summarises the project’s main outcomes, including technical deliverables, performance demonstrations and commercialisation insights.
Producing Green Liquefied Fuel Gas for Real-World Demonstration
Production
GreenQUEST successfully produced a large sample of green liquefied fuel gas (gLFG) in a custom-built mini-plant. This fuel was then used in downstream demonstrations, including conventional cookstove testing and electricity generation.
Cooking with gLFG: Testing a Green Alternative to Fossil LPG
Demonstration
GreenQUEST demonstrated that its gLFG can be used in conventional LPG cookstoves. In controlled testing, gLFG delivered cooking performance closely comparable to fossil LPG, supporting its potential as a drop-in low-carbon cooking fuel.
Generating Electricity from gLFG in the HYENA POWER POD
Demonstration
GreenQUEST demonstrated that gLFG produced in the project mini-plant can generate electricity in HYENA’s POWER POD fuel-cell system. The POWER POD produced over 10 kWh of electricity from the gLFG with stable output above 3 kW.
Developing the next generation scientists
Capacity building
GreenQUEST supported 12 MSc and 2 PhD students working on green LFG technologies, helping them build scientific skills, international networks and recognition through conference presentations and awards. This capacity building strengthens the future research base needed to advance sustainable energy solutions beyond the project.
